It is exactly what you would expect from Roland Emmerich: special effects worth seeing on a big screen combined with an implausible and overly-sentimental plot that would make MST3K froth at the mouth.

Nice… that’s about what I’d expect from him too. Seems his movies are all the same in that way. I might go for the special effects, but that’s about it.
It was stupid, big-budget fun and people going into it expecting anything else are a bit silly.
